A Technology-Centric view of IT in Business

This post shows one of the theories I’m useing in my bachelor thesis to analyze the influence of social media on business strategy. It was originally published by: Vasant Dhar and Arun Sundararajan, “Information Technologies in Business: A blueprint for education and research”, Information systems research, vol 18, No. 2, pp. 125-141 (2007).

A technology-Centric view of IT in Business

Dhar & Sundararajan(2007) argue that the past forty years certain principles in IT can be recognized that remain constant. These invariants can be used to interpret the past and make predictions about information technologies in the future. They present a model where in the influence of these technological invariants and the consequences on IT in Business are explained.

The value of twitter for blogs: statistics and strategy

Easy promotion and traffic

Once a blogger has formed a network on twitter that is interested in the same topics that he writes about, then you got the perfect channel to promote your writings. If I take myself for example I follow (and get followed by) people interested in Social Media, Business and Design. This way of communicating directly to your niche, might explain the high click through rates on twitter. I once tested how many people would click a link in an ordinary messages using bit.ly, that offers detailed statistics on the clicks you get. It turned out that of the 100 followers I had 6 clicked the link within 10 minutes of each other.

Time value of your tweet

Analyzing the clicks with bit.ly showed that the traffic you get from tweeting a link are within a time span of 10 minutes, so the value of your message is of limited time. This is because of the way the main twitter feed works. The feed is real time, and messages that are old are not likely to be viewed by any followers.

The future of web 3.0: Personal profiles as data filter.

Web 3.0 is about personal profiles and brands.

Many industry leaders have recognized that Twitter is just the start of a new web 3.0 era. A web that will be more human, real time and in which personal brands will play a major role. Andrew Keen held an inspiring presentation about web 3.0 at The next web 2009 conference in Amsterdam back in April. He beliefs that web 3.0 will have better business models were web 2.0 failed at this. Web 3.0 will be a place of great inequality, where people with more followers (or peers in their network) will have a much stronger personal brand. Khris Loux vision about web3.0 and decentralization of the web also adds to a better understanding of web3.0.

Opportunities and Personal profiles as data filter.

At the start of this new era where the new industry leaders still need to take form, there are great opportunities. Analyzing the developments of technology and the web, allows us to rethink systems. This is how I came up with the concept of using personal brands in a system to filter data.

Call to action theory applied to blog design

The Gutenberg rule

The Gutenberg diagram is a concept that maps out something called reading gravity. Reading gravity describes a habit of reading in the western world: left to right, top to bottom.

“It suggests that the bottom left area of the page will get least attention as our eyes scan the page from top left to bottom right and that our glance would end up in the lower right portion of the page. How can we utilize this concept? Buttons and calls to action could be placed in bottom right instead of bottom left, as this is the place where the visitor’s glance is likely to alight.”

Welcome to my new blog!

I’m happy to announce the launch of my new personal blog antoniothonis.com. In this web era that is evolving into personal brands it was about time for me to start blogging on this domain name.

As a generalist I try to diversify my knowledge as much as possible. This results in finding opportunities and writing about innovative concepts and ideas on this blog and communicating them to my readers and followers on twitter. On the about page you can find a more detailed description of the topics I’ll be writing about on the blog.

I want to thank Jepson for allowing me to give feedback on the beta of the Meta-Morphosis wordpress theme. Currently I’m useing a modified version of the theme. I specificly choose this theme for the layout, where comments are placed next to the blogpost. Giving the communication with my readers and the feedback I receive from them a more central role than traditional blog layouts.

I hope you’ll enjoy reading my blog, please subscribe to my rss feed or follow me on twitter.
